What I felt after translating “The Tale of Kotsubu-chan.”

I am Edward Kai Lawrence, the English translator of “The Tale of Kotsubu-chan.”
I’ve loved animals since I was a kid, and visiting Nara on vacation, I always looked forward to seeing the famous Nara deer.
I had never thought of deer in the context of our environment, though, so working on “Kotsubu-chan” was an extremely eye-opening experience.
Seeing the documented life of the abandoned fawn Kotsubu up close was very moving, and it made me understand the importance of protecting the personal space of the creatures we coexist with.
Through this book, I hope the travelers of the world visiting Nara Park will learn the correct way to interact with the deer.
