The Great Buddha

Many tourists who visit Nara will go to Todaiji Temple to see the Great Buddha.
Looking up at the Great Buddha, you will see a shining golden plate behind it.
This is called the "Kouhai," and represents the light emanating from the Buddha's body.
It is the same as the halo or nimbus depicted in Christian art.
And there are many small Buddha statues attached to the Kouhai.
These are called "Kebutsu," and are incarnations of the Buddha.
This is said to be so that the many incarnations can immediately go to help people.
The Great Buddha is not just a copper statue for sightseeing.
If you briefly bring your palms together to show respect to the Buddha, you may be able to travel more safely.
