Sansaku Legendary Historic Site
If you walk straight east along Sanjo-dori Street with the Kofukuji Five-storied Pagoda on your left, you will come to an old wooden monument.
It says “Sansaku legendary historic site”.
The legend is as follows.
A long time ago, when a child named Sansaku was practicing calligraphy, a deer came and tried to eat the paper he was practicing with.
When Sansaku threw a paperweight to scare away the deer, it hit the deer, and unfortunately the deer died.
At that time, there was a rule that anyone who killed a deer, a messenger of the gods, to be placed in a pit, stuffed with stones, and buried alive.
Sansaku was still a child, but he was not allowed.
This monument is said to mark the place where Sansaku was buried.
Even now, the deer in Nara Park are cherished as messengers of the gods.
Please don't harm the deer.
