Reason

Reason 1: Deer eat Garbage.

In the past, trash cans were installed, but the following problems occurred.

  • Deer rummaging through trash cans.
  • People leave garbage around the trash can.
  • Deer also eat plastic bags, cups and straws that are thrown in the trash can.
  • Many deer became sick, therefore all the trash cans in Nara Park were removed.

Reason 2: Trash Management Issues

A total of 17 million tourists visit Nara Park each year (an average of 46,000 per day).

Even if some trash cans were placed in Nara Park, they would soon be full.
The costs for collection would increase and collection would not be able to keep up.

Reason 3: Safety Issues

As in various parts of the world, garbage cans are removed as a measure against terrorism.
This is to prevent people and deer from being harmed by explosives and toxic substances thrown into garbage cans.
