History of Nara Park
More than 1,300 years ago, Nara City was the center of the country.
It was during the Nara period (710 to 784) that Buddhism was introduced into politics.
For this reason, large temples such as Todai-ji Temple and Kofuku-ji Temple were built in what is now Nara Park. Even after the capital was moved to Kyoto, and during the Edo era (1603 to 1868), when the samurai ruled the world, Kofuku-ji continued to hold sway over a vast territory.
On February 14, 1880, at the end of the Edo period and the beginning of Japan's path as a modern nation, Nara Park was officially opened as an urban park under the management of Nara Prefecture.
