Hands of the Great Buddha
Many visitors to Nara come to see the Great Buddha Hall of Todai-ji Temple.
The Great Buddha raises his right hand as if saying "Hi!" and rests his left hand on his knee with the palm facing upward.
Each of these hand gestures has its own meaning.
The form of the right hand is called “Semui-in''.
It removes fear and conveys the message, “There is no need to be afraid.''
The form of the left hand is called "Yogan-in".
It means “Here you go” offering a blessing.
If you understand this meaning and go to see the Great Buddha with a feeling of gratitude, your sightseeing in Nara may become even more wonderful.
