What do Deer Eat?

The deer in Nara Park are wild, so they are not fed.

Their staple food is Noshiba(Zoysia japonica). They also eat leaves and nuts.
Deer will try to eat anything, but they are herbivores.
If they are fed human food such as bread or sweets, the deer can't digest them and it will cause them pain and health problems.

The only food that is allowed is Deer Senbei sold in the park.
Deer Senbei is made only from flour and rice bran. It is safe for deer, but it is a treat and not a staple food.
Part of the proceeds from the sale of Deer Senbei is used to protect the deer.

How to properly serve Deer Senbei

When you run out of Senbei, spread your palms and appeal that you don't have anymore.

If you show the Senbei but don't let them eat it, the deer may get angry and attack you.
If you are surrounded by many deer, break Senbei, scatter them on the ground and leave the place quickly.
