Buddha statue placed outside the Great Buddha Hall

After viewing the Great Buddha of Todaiji Temple, look to the left when you exit the Great Buddha Hall.
There you will see a wooden statue standing alone, wearing a red cape and red cloth.
This statue is a disciple of the Buddha named Binzurusonja, who is called “Binzuru-sama” by the people.
It is said that Binzurusonja had a special ability to accomplish impossible things.

However, he used this power for his own greed and was expelled from the Buddha's presence as punishment.
Afterwards, he reflected on his actions, practiced asceticism, and was allowed to return to the Buddha's side again.
Binzurusonja is said to be outside the Great Buddha Hall to make up for his past wrongdoings by curing the illnesses of visitors to Todaiji Temple.
